History of the Faculty

The Faculty of Management was established on October 1, 1974 under the name Institute of Industry Organisation and Management (Instytut Organizacji i Zarz±dzania Przemysłem, IOiZP). Its originator and also the first Dean was Ferdynand Szwagrzyk, PhD. The launch of full-time and part-time programmes in Management and Marketing was the crowning moment of a long-lasting organisation and management teaching practice at various AGH-UST Faculties which dated back long before the Second World War. There were two breaking points in the history of the Faculty. The first one happened in 1980 when the Faculty of Industry Organisation and Management was officially founded. It consisted of two institutes: Institute of Industry Organisation and Management and Institute of Economic Sciences. The 1970s and 1980s saw the Faculty slowly stabilising its position (the Faculty was given a building at ul. Gramatyka 10 in 1979). The number of admissions per year fluctuated between 50 and 100. At that time the study curricula were primarily focussed on production management in heavy industry. The second breaking point was the year 1992 when the current Faculty name was introduced. 1990s brought rapid changes in the Faculty, resulting from the system transformation in Poland. The number of student admissions has risen to a few hundred per year. Owing to this fact, the Faculty ranks second among all AGH-UST faculties with respect to the student count and first - when part-time students number is concerned.

The study curricula have been modernised and adapted to market needs and the global education profile of managerial staff. A large-scale international cooperation has been developed in the area of teaching and student exchange. The Faculty also cooperates with domestic industrial companies, providing counselling as well as consulting and training services. A rapid development of academic staff - both quantitative and qualitative - has been observed. Modern study facilities have been built almost from the ground up - four computer labs and well-equipped lecture hall have been made available to students. Currently, the Faculty, just like the University, ranks among the best in the country. One of its characteristic features that has attracted a few candidates per index book for years, is the optimal combination of engineering knowledge and managerial skills in the courses offered.
